Megapack 3 is in production, 16 months after the factory was a field

When Tesla unveiled Megapack 3 and Megablock in July, the obvious question was how fast the hardware would become real. The answer arrived on August 6: the first production Megapack 3 rolled out of Tesla's brand-new Megafactory in Brookshire, Texas, per Electrek's August 6 report. The factory broke ground in April 2025. Sixteen months from dirt to shipping product is fast for any industry; for grid-scale energy hardware, it's nearly unheard of.

A 50 GWh factory, built like Tesla means it

The Brookshire plant in Waller County, a roughly $200 million facility, is designed to reach 50 gigawatt-hours of annual production capacity, per Drive Tesla Canada's coverage. For scale, that single factory's ceiling is more storage per year than the entire world deployed annually just a few years ago.

It's also Tesla's third Megafactory, joining Lathrop, California and Shanghai, and the timing isn't charity. Both existing plants have been running at capacity, with demand for grid batteries outpacing what Tesla could build. Brookshire exists because the order book demanded it, which is the healthiest possible reason for a factory to exist. Benzinga's August coverage framed it bluntly: Tesla's battery business is growing faster than its car business.

What makes Megapack 3 a bigger deal than a bigger battery

The unit itself stores roughly 5 MWh, up from 3.9 MWh in the Megapack 2 XL, about 28% more energy in the same footprint. Density is the quiet superpower of grid storage: land, permitting, and interconnection are the slow parts of any project, so more energy per pad means more storage per approved site without another trip through the paperwork.

Stack that with the Megablock architecture announced alongside it, and Tesla's pitch to utilities is shorter timelines on both ends: faster to build the batteries, faster to deploy them.

Meanwhile, 500 MWh went live down the road

The same week Brookshire started production, a very large pile of the previous generation switched on. Ørsted's Old 300 Storage project in Needville, Texas, 250 MW and 500 MWh of Tesla Megapacks built at Lathrop, reached commercial operation, per Electrek's August 6 story and pv magazine's same-day report.

The details paint the picture of what mature grid storage looks like. The batteries sit next to the 430 MW Old 300 Solar farm that came online in 2024 and powers roughly 80,000 homes, so the pairing soaks up midday solar and feeds it back to the ERCOT grid when Texas evenings get expensive. The developer trained the local Needville Fire Department on Megapack safety before switch-on. And the solar-plus-storage pair is projected to generate around $110 million in local property tax revenue over its life, real money for a small Fort Bend County community. It's Ørsted's twelfth Texas project, which tells you how comfortable serious infrastructure players have gotten with this playbook.

The through-line: Texas is becoming Tesla's energy state

Add it up and Texas now hosts Tesla's vehicle plant at Giga Austin, the new Megafactory at Brookshire, and a growing fleet of deployed Megapack projects stabilizing the same grid those factories draw from. The state that famously stress-tests its own grid every summer is quietly becoming the place where the fix gets manufactured and installed.

For Tesla, energy has graduated from side project to second engine. Factories don't get built in 16 months for markets a company is hedging on.
