Tesla shows the Cybercab's unboxed assembly line: one car every 10 seconds

Tesla has finally shown how the Cybercab gets built. On September 8 the company's Robotaxi account posted a 48-second factory video of the unboxed assembly process it first described in 2023, and the numbers attached to it are the story: a production line half the length of a conventional one, and a target of one finished Cybercab every 10 seconds. A Model Y takes about 34 seconds.

The clip is short, but it is the clearest picture yet of the manufacturing bet behind the $25,000 robotaxi that has been carrying paying riders in Austin since September 4.

What the video actually shows

Conventional car assembly is a single long line. A painted body shell moves down it and workers and robots bolt parts onto it one station at a time, reaching into a shrinking space as the car fills up. Unboxed assembly throws that out.

In the footage, the Cybercab exists as separate pieces for most of its life: the battery box, the front section and the rear section are each built on their own parallel lines, with the seats, wiring and interior going in while the parts are still open and easy to reach. Only at the end do the finished modules meet and get framed together with the sides, the roof and the doors. InsideEVs called it the best look yet at a process Tesla has been talking about for three years without showing.

Tesla's own description on the post was blunt: assembling modules in parallel and framing the car in one step at the end cuts the production line size in half and frees up much greater factory capacity. The account also called it the first real revolution in automotive manufacturing in over a century, which is a big claim, and one that a working line in Giga Texas does more to support than any keynote slide did.

Why the cycle time is the number that matters

Cycle time is how often a finished car rolls off the line. At 34 seconds, a Model Y line produces roughly 100 cars an hour. At 10 seconds it is 360. Sawyer Merritt noted that Tesla's long-term goal is 5 seconds, which would be over 700 cars an hour from a single line.

Those are not the same as annual output, because lines stop for shifts, maintenance and parts. But the ratio is what changes the economics. A vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals, a single motor and a 47.6 kWh pack is already cheaper to build than a Model Y. Building three or four of them in the time it takes to build one Model Y is what turns a $25,000 sticker into a business rather than a loss leader.

It also explains why the line is shorter. When the modules are built side by side instead of one after another, the factory footprint per car drops, and EVwire's write-up points out that this is the part most likely to be copied: a shorter line is a cheaper factory, wherever you build it.

The panels you are looking at

For anyone who designs wraps, the video is also a reminder of how few body panels the Cybercab has. The sides come on as single large pieces, the roof is one part, and the doors are the only things that swing. That is the same reason the Cybertruck is the easiest Tesla to design for: big flat surfaces, no compound curves to fight, and artwork that lands on the car exactly where you drew it on the template.

The Cybercab is not something you can wrap in Paint Shop today, because it is not a car you own. What comes next

Tesla has not said how many Cybercabs the Austin line is producing per day, only that the process shown is the one running. The fleet in Texas was in the dozens at launch, and the company's stated plan is to scale Cybercab output through 2027 as the Robotaxi service adds cities.

The next data point is likely the Q3 production and delivery report in early October, which is the first quarter where Cybercab units could appear as their own line. Until then, the video is the proof of concept: a car built in pieces, framed once, and done before you finish reading this sentence.
