6.7 million public chargers later, range anxiety is running out of road

The world added public EV chargers faster last year than at any point in history. Per BloombergNEF's Electric Vehicle Outlook 2026, public charging networks grew 28% in 2025, pushing the global count to 6.7 million connectors, and 2026 installations are on track to add 19% more on top of that. The chargers people actually plan road trips around grew even faster: ultra-fast connectors expanded almost 50% in a single year, in Europe and the US alike.

Remember when "but where will you charge it" was the argument? The argument lost.

The buildout, by the numbers

The scale here deserves a second look:

• 6.7 million public connectors worldwide, up 28% in 2025, per BloombergNEF.
• Ultra-fast charging grew almost 50% in 2025 in both Europe and the US. Not total chargers, the fastest tier, the ones that turn a meal stop into a full battery.
• 2026 is adding 19% more on top of the record base, per the same outlook, which also expects passenger EV sales to reach 23.3 million globally this year.
• 1.1 million new public charge points went live in 2025 alone, according to AUTO Connected Car News' August 2 report on Roland Berger's EV Charging Index. That's roughly 3,000 new places to plug in every single day.
• In China, the same report notes, nearly half of all public chargers are already fast or ultra-fast.

And the demand side is keeping pace: that August 2 report leads with the stat of the year, 1 in 4 cars sold worldwide is now an EV. A quarter of the global market, feeding a charging network compounding at double-digit rates. Each side keeps justifying the other.

Range anxiety had a good run

Think about what an EV road trip required in 2016. Spreadsheet planning. Backup chargers for your backup chargers. A tolerance for 50 kW stations behind a shuttered mall. Charging was the adventure, and not in the fun way.

Now run the same trip on 2026 infrastructure. Ultra-fast plugs at highway plazas, grocery stores, and hotel lots. Route planners in the car that treat charging stops as rounding errors. Enough density that a broken charger means driving to the next one, not rewriting the day. The 50% ultra-fast growth is the stat that matters most here, because speed is what killed the last real objection: when the car charges in the time it takes to order lunch, the "waiting around" story stops being true.

Norway shows where this all lands. Per the AUTO Connected Car News report, 89% of new cars sold there are already battery electric or plug-in hybrid. An entire country crossed the finish line, and its road trips work fine. Europe as a whole moved about 3.7 million EVs in 2025, nearly 30% of its new-car sales, and China became the first major market to push EVs past half of everything sold. These aren't early adopters anymore. They're just adopters.

The compounding matters as much as the totals. A network growing 28% in one year and 19% the next, against a car fleet that turns over slowly, means charger density per EV driver keeps improving in exactly the places drivers felt the gaps: rural corridors, apartment neighborhoods, and the long empty stretches between cities.

Tesla owners have been living in the future

The US slice of this boom crossed 74,000 DC fast-charging ports this summer, up 27% in a year, and Tesla drivers get the best seat in it. The Supercharger network set the reliability bar the rest of the industry is now chasing, and the connector Tesla created has become the national standard, which means the network keeps growing while every stall still lights up for a Tesla first. Global buildout plus the head start: that's the ownership math in 2026.
