The Tesla Model Y crossed 100,000 new registrations in Norway on May 20, the first car of any kind to reach that number in the country's history.

What happened

The Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) counted 100,224 new Model Y registrations since the first deliveries landed in August 2021, per Not a Tesla App's breakdown. That's less than 5 years from first delivery to a record no gas car managed in decades of trying. OFV chief Geir Inge Stokke called it "remarkable how a single car model has crossed 100,000 new registrations in such a short time."

The pace kept climbing as the car matured: 8,267 registrations in 2021, over 17,000 in 2022, over 23,000 in 2023, and a peak of 27,621 in 2025 after the Juniper refresh landed, per Drive Tesla Canada. In a nation of 5.5 million people, roughly 1 in every 29 passenger cars on the road is now a Model Y, Teslarati notes. And this isn't fleet padding: 87.6% of them are registered to private individuals, spread from Oslo (16,861 cars) to small municipalities across the country.

Norway is the world's most mature EV market, the first country where electric cars effectively took over new sales. The Model Y didn't just win the EV segment there. It became the best-selling vehicle in the country outright, which makes the milestone a preview of what full EV adoption looks like everywhere else.

Our take

This is what winning the long game looks like. Norway spent two decades building toward an electric future, every brand showed up to compete, and the car Norwegians picked more than any other in history is a Tesla. The 87.6% private-ownership figure is the telling stat: this is one hundred thousand households choosing the same car, one driveway at a time.

The milestone comes with a funny side effect, and Not a Tesla App's data spells it out: over 35% of Norway's Model Ys are white, 29% are black, and another 25% are gray. Nearly 9 in 10 of the most common car in the country wear one of three monochrome colors. When 1 in 29 cars on the road is a Model Y, and they're all white, black, or gray, telling yours apart in a parking lot becomes a genuine daily puzzle.

That's the gap digital wraps fill. A custom wrap design, the artwork your car displays on its in-dash illustration and in the Tesla app, makes your Model Y unmistakably yours without touching the paint or spending vinyl money. Our Tesla wrap color guide covers what actually looks good on each model if you want a starting point, and the gallery is full of Model Y designs from owners who got tired of monochrome.
