Tesla Semi picked for a 2,500-truck order, the biggest electric truck deal in US history

The Tesla Semi just got its biggest vote of confidence yet. On September 22, a new shipper-and-carrier alliance called ZET SCALE named Tesla the primary supplier for 2,500 battery-electric Class 8 trucks, as Electrek reported. That is the largest electric heavy-truck order ever placed in the United States, and it would roughly double the number of electric big rigs on American roads.

The timing is hard to miss. Two days later, on September 24, Tesla opens its dedicated Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, with a line built for 50,000 trucks a year.

What ZET SCALE is

ZET SCALE stands for the Zero-Emission Truck Shipper-Carrier Alliance Leading Electrification. It is run jointly by Smart Freight Centre and Catalyst Mobility, the organization formerly known as CALSTART, which posted the announcement on its own site.

The idea is simple and clever. Big shippers want their freight moved on electric trucks, but most carriers are small fleets that can't take on the risk of a new kind of truck by themselves. ZET SCALE pools the demand. The founding shippers, Microsoft and PepsiCo, commit freight volume, and a financing arm called ZET Financial places the truck orders and runs a lease program that absorbs the resale-value risk carriers worry about most.

So the order is not one company buying 2,500 trucks. It is an entire network of carriers getting electric trucks on terms they can actually take.

Tesla leads, and the lanes are real

Tesla is the primary supplier. Kenworth, Volvo and RIDE are secondary suppliers in the wider program, so not every one of the 2,500 will wear a T badge. The headline still matters: when a program this size picked its lead truck, it picked the Semi.

The deployment map reads like a list of America's busiest freight corridors:

  • Los Angeles, Stockton and Bakersfield in California
  • Seattle and Tacoma
  • Houston, Dallas and San Antonio
  • Chicago, Atlanta, and the Newark and New York area

Those are drayage and regional haul lanes, which is exactly the work the Semi was designed for. Trucks run out and back to a home yard, they charge overnight or during a driver's break, and the fuel savings add up fast because the miles are high and predictable.

The same week, IMC Logistics ordered 50 more Semis for California drayage, a mix of Standard Range and Long Range trucks. Electrek puts a Long Range Semi at roughly $290,000.

Why it lands this week

For most of its life the Semi was a truck people could see but not buy in volume. PepsiCo has run a pilot fleet since late 2022, and it has been a steady proof point, but a pilot is not a production program.

That changes on Wednesday. The Sparks factory is about 1.7 million square feet, and Tesla has invited fleet customers to a rollout event with factory tours and ride-alongs, which we previewed earlier this month. A factory with that much capacity needs an order book to match. Two days before the doors open, the order book just got its anchor tenant.

Analysts expect Tesla to deliver somewhere between 5,000 and 15,000 Semis in 2026 as the line ramps. A 2,500-truck commitment, spread across multiple years and dozens of carriers, gives that ramp something solid to aim at.

What it means for the charging network

Every one of those trucks needs a Megacharger, and Tesla has been building them along exactly these corridors. A pooled order like ZET SCALE makes charging easier to plan, because the lanes are known in advance. Chargers get built where the freight already runs, rather than in the hope that it will.

That is the same pattern that made the Supercharger network work for cars: pick the routes people actually drive, build ahead of demand, and let the network pull the vehicles along with it.

The bigger picture

Heavy trucks are a small share of the vehicles on the road and a large share of the emissions and the fuel bill. That makes them the category where electrification pays back fastest, and it is why a single order this size moves the national numbers.

It also rounds out a very busy few weeks for Tesla's product lineup. The Cybercab started taking paying riders in Austin, the Roadster reveal is set for October 1, and now the Semi has the largest electric truck order in the country behind it on the eve of its factory opening.

We'll cover the rollout event once it's done. Your own Tesla doesn't haul freight, but it can still look like it came off a fleet livery sheet: the gameday wrap guide shows how bold two-color liveries read on the car's screen, and the studio will build one for your model in a few minutes.
