The six-seat Model Y L is here, and it starts at $61,990

Tesla's best-selling car finally grew into its family-hauler era. On July 2, Tesla opened US orders for the Model Y L, the long-wheelbase, six-seat version of the Model Y, and Electrek's launch coverage pegs the price at $61,990 before destination for the Launch Series that's available at the start.

China got this car first, and the US spec kept the good parts. This isn't a third row shoehorned into the existing body. The wheelbase stretches 5.9 inches and overall length grows about 7 inches, and Tesla spent every one of those inches on people.

Real seats, not jump seats

The layout is 2+2+2: front buckets, second-row captain's chairs, and a genuine third row. Anyone who has folded themselves into a compact SUV's "occasional" third row knows why that matters. Captain's chairs in the middle mean a walk-through aisle to the back, which is the difference between kids climbing in themselves and a parent performing gymnastics in a parking lot.

Forbes' launch report notes the L is now the most expensive Model Y, and the spec sheet earns it. Tesla claims 325 miles of EPA-estimated range and 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Read that again: a six-seat family SUV that outruns most hot hatches and still crosses state lines on a charge. The longer body barely dents efficiency because it's shaped by the same aero discipline as the standard car.

What the Launch Series includes

The US launch is a single, fully loaded trim based on the Premium spec, and per Not a Tesla App's rundown, the Launch Series sweetens the deal with a free 12-month subscription to Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and 12 months of free Supercharging. On a car aimed at road-trip families, a year of free long-distance fuel is not a small throw-in.

Production is already running at Giga Texas. The order page lists delivery in the October to November window, so this is a fall driveway arrival, not a someday reservation. Forbes' follow-up on timing confirms the wait: real, but measured in weeks, not years.

Why this launch matters

The three-row segment is where American families actually shop, and until now Tesla served it with exactly one answer: the Model X, at nearly six figures. The Model Y L lands $30,000-plus below where the X sat, in the heart of loaded-Highlander and EV9 territory, with more range than either of those and the Supercharger network behind it.

It also arrives at the perfect moment in the lineup's story. The standard Model Y just became the first car ever to hit 100,000 registrations in Norway, and the Juniper refresh has been holding up its range claims for half a year. The Y isn't just Tesla's volume car; it's the default family EV worldwide. The L takes the one buyer objection that was left, "we need three rows," and deletes it.

The blank canvas got bigger

Here's the part we can't ignore: the Model Y L is nearly 16 feet of smooth panels, and every stretched inch is wrap real estate. A longer roofline and extended rear doors change the proportions in a way that makes side graphics breathe. Designs that felt cramped on the standard Y suddenly have room.

We already support the Model Y L in FrunkLab, so you don't have to wait for your October delivery to start designing. Pick the L in the studio, see your design on the 3D car, and have the wrap concept settled before the VIN is even assigned. If you're new to designing wraps, our walkthrough on your first Tesla wrap covers the whole flow in about ten minutes.

Our take

Tesla's playbook for the last decade has been to enter a segment late and reset its expectations. The Model Y L does it again: more range than the three-row EV competition, quicker than any of them, cheaper than the Model X ever was, and backed by the only charging network families trust for a summer road trip. The Launch Series pricing will drop as lesser trims arrive, but the early buyers get the free FSD year and the first ones on the road.

The family SUV was the last mainstream vehicle Tesla didn't have a direct answer for. Now it does, and it does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds with six people aboard.

Your Model Y L arrives this fall; its wrap design can be done tonight, so open the studio and claim the long canvas first.
