Tesla's $80 adapter turns the Model Y into a rolling power outlet

On August 14, Tesla added an $80 Outlet Adapter to its online shop and configurator for every Model Y Premium trim in the US, both Rear-Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive, per Teslarati's launch report. Plug it into the Gen 3 Mobile Connector, and the car exposes a standard 120-volt household outlet fed by the traction battery.

The numbers, via Electrek's August 15 coverage: a 20-amp socket with 2.4 kilowatts of continuous output. That's not Powerwall territory, but it's real power. A laptop, a projector, an induction cooktop, a power-tool battery charger, an air pump, a fridge riding out an outage, or every string light at the campsite, all running off a battery pack that dwarfs any portable power station you can buy.

What Vehicle-to-Load actually means

V2L is the simplest member of the vehicle-to-everything family. No home wiring, no installer, no permits. The car is the generator; the adapter is the extension cord. Until now, Tesla reserved it for the Cybertruck, which ships with outlets in the bed and cabin, and the Model Y Performance.
