Tesla's Summer Update kills the USB drive: custom wraps now upload from the app
Updated 2026-07-21.
Tesla announced its 2026 Summer Update today, and buried in a release-notes list full of Grok tricks and navigation smarts is the single best line we've ever read in a Tesla changelog: Send Custom Wraps from Mobile App.
Tesla's own description, straight from the announcement: skip the USB drive and upload a custom wrap of your car from the mobile app. The feature lives in the app's Creations section under a new Wrap tab, and applies in the car via Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps. Not a Tesla App's full breakdown covers the whole update, which is expected to ship as version 2026.26 and start rolling out shortly.
Let's be clear about why this is the headline.
The USB stick was the last hard part
Since Tesla added custom wrap support to Paint Shop, the workflow has been: design a wrap, export the PNG, format a USB drive with the right file system, create the right folder, copy the file, walk to the car, plug it in, and hope you named everything correctly. It worked, and thousands of owners did it. But every step was a place to lose someone. The person who saw a custom wrap on social media and thought "I want that" mostly didn't own a spare USB stick and a free afternoon.
Now the pipeline is: get the wrap image on your phone, upload it in the app, open Paint Shop in the car. That's it. Tesla even calls out the exact use case in its announcement, per Electrek's release-notes rundown: download a wrap from a website or social media and send it straight to your car. Tesla points creators at its public custom-wraps GitHub templates for the format, the same official templates our studio designs against.
You can guess why we're excited. Every wrap you design in the FrunkLab studio exports as exactly the PNG Paint Shop expects. Until today, the last step of our export walkthrough involved a trip to find a USB drive. Soon that step is "save the image to your phone." Design on your laptop over coffee, upload from your phone in the driveway, see it on the car's screen before you finish the coffee.
The rest of the Summer Update is no filler either
The wrap news overshadows what would otherwise be a strong update on its own. Teslarati's coverage runs through the list:
- Grok grows hands. The assistant can now place phone calls, search and play music, adjust climate, control heated and ventilated seats, and open the glovebox. It also expands to all of Europe.
- Navigation learns your life. Automatic navigation now predicts common destinations beyond work, home, and calendar entries. A new preferred-routes feature remembers the way you actually like to go and stops arguing with you about it.
- Trip planning from the couch. You can set your desired arrival energy from the mobile app and configure a trip before you get in the car.
- Caraoke keeps score now. Park the car, pick a song, settle the family argument with numbers.
- FSD stats in the app. Streaks, total autonomous miles, and tutorials move to your phone, joining the momentum from FSD v14 Lite going wide.
- Rear-screen parental lock, browser camera and mic access (Discord and Meet calls from the charger stall), Apple Music queueing from search, and Supercharger search by name round it out.
What this means for the wrap scene
Digital wraps just crossed the line from hobbyist feature to mainstream one. The audience for a custom wrap was never limited by desire; it was limited by the USB drive. Removing it means the person who sees a great wrap in a group chat can be running it the same day. Expect the community to get louder, weirder, and a lot bigger. If you're new to the whole idea, our guide to digital wraps vs physical wraps explains why the on-screen version is the zero-cost, zero-commitment way in.
Our take
Tesla keeps doing this: take a feature the community bootstrapped through USB sticks and folder names, watch people love it anyway, then pave the road. Lock chimes, light shows, and now wraps. The Summer Update's Grok and navigation features will get the mainstream coverage, but the wrap upload is the one that changes behavior, because it turns a weekend project into a two-minute impulse.
The rollout begins shortly, so the window between "I designed a wrap" and "my car is wearing it" is about to collapse to the length of an app upload. Open the studio now and have your design ready the day the update hits your car.
